In Camera, Limpe Fuchs and John Duncan in Switzerland and It

Hello,
we would like to inform you about four rare concert evenings in
Switzerland and Italy. On the Swiss dates, Basel on June 5^th and Bern
on the 6^th , there will be a special commissioned work of *John Duncan*
played by the artist himself and members of the* Ensemble Phoenix
Basel,* and on all four dates, including Milan on June 7^th and Ivrea on
the 8^th , you will have the pleasure of listening to performances by
*Limpe Fuchs* and *In Camera* (Christoph Heemann and Timo van Luijk).
The above mentioned artists have all been carving a very unique path
through the windings of music history during the last few decades.
Although coming from three different generations, there is a significant
connection between them all by consequence of how they've approached
their paths; each being far from academic sound analysis, demonstrating
a very organic, archaic dealing with their own music*.* They each seem
to come closer to the origin of why people make music. Due to each of
their particular approaches in experimentation and improvisation, it is
often difficult to describe the atmosphere of the performances to the
potential audience with the common vocabulary of the music business.
Their refusal against commercial trends is certainly one of the reasons
why, despite numerous published recordings, only a small part of the
interested musical audience have had access to this world until now and
given such a rare occasion to expand your spectrum, you should not let a
chance like this pass you by.
The multimedia artist *JOHN DUNCAN* is still known for many of his
provocative performances from the'70s. Born in America, he also lived
and worked in Tokyo, Amsterdam and currently in Bologna, where he also
teaches audio art at the Accademia delle Belle Arti. His events and
installations have been and are widely shown and acclaimed around the
world. For thirty years he has / /belonged to the big unclassifiable, as
only the contemporary video and media art scene is able to produce. From
his scandal loaded early works with videos, installations, radio
plays,(short wave noises are also one of his most common "instruments")
to an often searched for collaboration with other artists, only one
thing is sure about Duncan's work, his unpredictable character.* *
Together with John Duncan, the *ENSEMBLE PHOENIX BASEL* will perform the
piece "Phantom Broadcast" scored by an email collaboration for
saxophone, piano, bass, percussion, flute, bass clarinet, trombone,
electric guitar, cello and electronics.
/"John Duncan is a rare artist who is totally immersed in existential
research. His lengthy career of electroacoustic intensity and
confrontational performance art events is the result of rigorous
investigations into a number of arcane, metaphysical, and at times
transgressive themes. Duncan portrays his work as a catalyst, inciting a
transmission of energy through which he seeks to compel the audience to
actively participate in the process of investigation and
self-discovery."/ -Jim Haynes, The Wire
*LIMPE FUCHS* studied classical piano, violin in Munich and in
particular percussion with Hans Holzl, citing avant-garde composers such
as Murray Schaefer and John Cage as her early musical influences. She
prefers to call herself a percussionist in the tradition of sound-scape
artists yet it is also clear that the visual aspect of her work has
always been given the same attention as the acoustic. Over her
forty-year career she has continued experimenting with "no formalism"
improvisational sound and visual performance using handmade instruments
and sound sculptures. Her engaging performances are meant to be
carefully listened to, requiring attention from the audience as she
moves freely in space evoking her natural sound-scapes while playing her
violin, woodhorn, ballaststring, a two-meter-handmade lithophone, sheet
metal, rocks, pieces of wood, fabric and singing in her unique bird-like
style.
Limpe Fuchs has been accredited as a seminal influence on the
"Krautrock" scene of the late '60s and '70s and later became an
inspiration for the experimental psychedelic underground of the late
'70s and early '80s (HNAS, Nurse with Wound, etc.) and for generations
after. Limpe started her career in the late sixties with Anima Musica
along with her then partner, the sculptor Paul Fuchs, and in 1971 they
recorded their first album called Stuermischer Himmel. The next release
was an unofficial release of the three-day Ossiach Festival recorded
live including performances by Weather Report and Tangerine Dream among
others. It was here that they met with the organizer, the famed pianist
Friedrich Gulda, who soon joined Limpe and Paul to create Anima.
Subsequently* *the albums entitled Anima and Musik Fur Alle were both
released in 1972*.* From 1969 till 1989 the duo continued performing,
recording, touring (most notoriously on a tractor traveling at 30km/h
which pulled the stage) often adding new members including their son,
Zoro, She then started on her solo career and continues to perform live,
also collaborating with many musicians and she has even ventured into
theater performance. Most recent collaborators include Christoph
Reiserer, Julia Scholzel, Christoph Heemann and Steve Stapleton.
*IN CAMERA *is composed of *Christoph Heemann *and *Timo van Luijk*,
both experienced and quite active in the contemporary experimental music
world. In Camera was formed in 2003 out of a twenty year dialogue
between the duo who have recorded two albums together. On these dates,
Heemann will play the Moog and manipulate prerecorded sounds live to
generate lush electronic drone-scapes while van Luijk symbiotically adds
to the visual sound layers with his electronic and acoustic instruments.
Both of them balancing between the frontier of improvisation and
composition, between drones, electronics and electro-acoustic, the
overall effect being of an intense beauty.
