Review: NEW! RAP-CD #031 SZKIEVE "Chants Et Danses Folkloriques..." CD
With his most recent output "Folkloric songs and dances from the high plains" Szkieve takes his characteristic blend of synthetic and organic sounds one step further. This album, the first full length studio recording since 2003 for Szkieve, explores cold minimal ambient territories, rich sci-fi inspired spirals of sonic textures and heavily modified crispy field recordings. The deep drones, whispery hisses and dusty distortion from this album adequately depicts a certain picture of the high plains, a region full of mountains, rivers and deserts exposed to eternal snow, continuous wind and unremitting sand storms. With his sharp, original and well defined sound Szkieve contributes once more to the creation of new bridges between noise and electronic music. This CD is only available as a limited edition in a full colour cardboard packaging on the influential Ecuadorian noise label, Rape Art Productions.
Szkieve (pronounced s-kee-vh, a misspelled equivalent for the word "skew" or "bent" in the Brussels' dialect) is Dimitri della Faille who founded the project in 1998. Szkieve has extensively performed live in Europe, Asia and in North and South America. Szkieve's music is made of intense and complex compositions that assemble rich textures and expansive sounds. Szkieve's sound explorations could be described as 'scientific', comparable to the works of modern electronic composers. But instead of 'dry, academic experiments', Szkieve transforms moods into music and the result is quite unusual for this genre.
