Wie auch schon das Vorgängeralbum, so ist auch "Basidia" wieder reichlich düster und behäbig ausgefallen. Michael Palace evoziert wieder eine Reihe von schummrig, schaurigen Atmosphären, die sich eher langsam, aber doch gezielt entwickeln und fast immer ins Schwarze treffen. No pun intended. Palace verbindet seine Down Tempo Electronica mit einigen Field Recordings, die er im Amazonas gesammelt hat. Man sollte die Platte deshalb keineswegs als eindimensional oder flach abtun, denn bei genauerem Hören offenbaren sich doch ungeahnte Feinheiten, die bisweilen von den mächtigen und schweren Beats etwas erdrückt werden. Wie gesagt, hat man es hier jedoch keinesfalls mit einer stumpfsinnigen Platte zu tun. Zwar ist mir "Basidia" über weite Strecken etwas zu kalt und transparent geraten, doch dies ist schließlich auch die Ausdrucksästhetik, die Michael Palace für seine Musik verwendet. Das ist nicht immer einladend und wohlwollend, doch effektvoll und eindrucksvoll. Bleibt noch zu erwähnen, dass man hier über eine Stunde schaurig schönes Hörerlebnis geboten bekommt und Freunde der dunklen Electronicaklänge hier definitiv nicht vorbeigehen sollten.
